THE MUSEUMS OF CAMAIORE
The Museo Archeologico The Museo Archeologico
Camaiore has two museums. The Museum of Sacred Art was founded in 1936 during the 17th century Confraternity of the Santissimo Sacramento and contains various paintings and a collection of tapestries, jewels and furniture, dating from the 14th to the 18th century and taken from the churches of the Camaiore municipality. Among the most important pieces are the 14th century sculpture of the Virgin Mary with Child, and the famous Pulzella di Camaiore, a statue carved of petrified wood attributed to Matteo Civitali.
The Archaeological Museum is housed in the 16th century Tori-Massoni Palace and was founded in 1986. Only the didactic section is open to visitors, who can expect to find prehistoric artefacts found in the Grotta dell’Onda, pottery and reconstructions of ancient tombs from the Etruscan era and coins and earthen wear from the roman Acquarella villa.
