THE CASTLES OF CAMAIORE
Camaiore Camaiore
In the medieval times, Camaiore was literally littered with castles and forts, which unfortunately have since been reduced to barely visible ruins. The most important was probably the castle of Monetecastresse, which was situated on an outcrop of Mount Prana and was owned by the Lords of Corvaia and Vallecchia. It was the last point of defence to fall to the Lucchesi in 1226. It was abandoned in the 16th century and it is now only possible to discern the remains of the 12th century keep and a few of its outbuildings.
The Rotaio Castle, on the other hand, was built in a more dominant position, over the Via Francigena. Built by the Lucchesi in 1223, it is still possible to make out the castle walls and a rectangular guard barracks. Of Montemagno Castle, also situated on the Via Francigena, only parts of the walls and the façade of the church of San Bartolomeo remain, while the Gombitelli Castle still proffers remains of two of it’s towers, almost completely covered by greenery.
Few are the remains of La Penna Castle at Casoli, Peralla Castle at Pieve di Camaiore, Pedona Castle, where parts of the walls remain, Albiano Castle, the Rocca di Monteggiori, Montebello Castle and the castle of Greppolungo.
There are no traces whatsoever of the castles of Fibbialla and Orbicciano.
