VILLAGES OF CAMAIORE
Casoli Casoli
The Camaiore territory is very vast and it the only municipality of Versilia which has hamlets in the hills, the mountains, and by the sea. In the north, the main hamlets are Casoli, at the foot of the Apuane Alps, near the Grotta dell’Onda; Greppolungo, home to an ancient castle; Metato, sheltered by the buttress of Monte Prana and home to the 18th century church dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta; and Montebello, on the slopes of Monte Gabberi, where the remains of an old castle can be found. To the east lie the hamlets of Monteggiori, with it’s fortified medieval castle; Capezzano Pianore, home to the 18th century Villa Borbone delle Pianore; and Pedona, with the church of Saint Jacopo which dates back the 13th century.
To the south lie the hamlets of Pontemazzori, with the church of Sant’Andrea, Nocchi, home to Villa Montecanti – Bartolomei; Montemagno and Valpromaro, both crossed by the Via Francigeni; and Pieve, with the 12th century church of Saint Giovanni Battista.
The eastern hamlets include the lovely Gombitelli, situated on a peak of Monte Calvario, with it’s entirely unique dialect; Orbicciano, with the churches of San Giorgio and San Lorenzo; Migliano, with the church of San Martin and Santa Maria; and Albiano Castello, with the 18th century church of Santa Maria.
Coastal towns include Lido di Camaiore, whose sandy beaches stretch for miles between Marina Pietrasanta and Viareggio.
